Mirconeedling is a cosmetic procedure. The purpose of this treatment is to generate new collagen and skin tissue to smooth, firm, and tone skin. It involves pricking the skin with tiny sterilized needles. The small wounds cause your body to make more collagen and elastin, which heal your skin and help you look younger. Microneedling is mostly used on the face and may reduce the appearance of acne, scars, dark spots, wrinkles, and large pores. You might also hear it called collagen induction therapy.
For safety, microneedling is minimally invasive, requiring little to no downtime. It’s considered safe for most people who are in overall good health. However, the procedure may not be safe for people who use certain acne medications, for those with active acne, or for those with moderate to severe psoriasis or eczema. Please note that You can experience minor redness and irritation for a few days after the procedure.
About your session
Each session will last about 60 minutes with an extra 30 minutes for the numbing cream to take effect. *PLEASE NOTE THAT, TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SESSION, YOU WILL NEED TO PURCHASE A NUMBING CREAM FROM THE CHEMIST AND APPLY TO YOUR FACE 30 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR SESSION SO YOU CANNOT FEEL THE NEEDLE PRICKS. Every person has different level of pain tolerance. Depending on how deep you want the needle to pierce your skin, some people might not need the numbing cream, but it is generally recommended to apply numbing cream before the session to avoid any discomfort. To begin the session, our beauty therapist will move a pen-shaped or rolling tool with tiny needles around your face. The needles make small cuts in your skin, which causes a bit of bleeding. After the session, our beauty therapist will apply serum and cream for calming and healing. For healing time, it may take few days to a week to heal, depending on how deep the needles pierce your skin.
What are the benefits of microneedling?
Microneedling involves the use of very fine needles that create tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin. This causes the body to begin stimulating new collagen and elastin, both key elements in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Patients can also see improvements in overall skin texture. Microneedling for stretch marks and acne scars is a very common practice among patients.
Is microneedling treatment painful?
Patients typically feel some mild discomfort during their microneedling sessions, but it is not considered painful. Numbing cream is generally recommended if you have low pain tolerance or anxious about the procedure.
*Please note that with the half-price promotion, you will have to get your own numbing cream and smooth it on your face 30 minutes before the session.
What’s downtime like after microneedling?
Whether you choose microneedling for acne scars or other skin issues, you will notice that the skin appears bright and red following your session. For this reason, we do not recommend planning any significant events right after your appointment. Downtime varies from person to person, but generally, you may experience mild redness and mild swelling for about 24 hours after your microneedling treatment. Depending on the depth of the needle (0.25mm/0.5mm/1.0mm/1.5mm/2.25mm) some people might heal in 3-5 days and some people might heal after a week. We recommend 4 treatments spaced 1 month apart to see visible improvements, as the body requires time to produce new collagen and elastin. Results will continue to improve for a few months as the collagen remodels.
What should I avoid after microneedling?
To ensure proper healing, we encourage patients to observe the following instructions for at least 24 hours after treatment.
*Wash the treated area with a gentle cream cleanser 24 hours after your treatment. Gently massage the face with lukewarm water. Remove serum and other debris such as dried blood. Do not scrub, use a washcloth or a Clarisonic brush. Cleanse treated area twice a day. Do not use exfoliating products for 72 hours.
*Keep skin hydrated with post-care products provided by the professional who performed your treatment. lt is very important to keep the skin hydrated the days following your treatment. New cell regeneration requires at least 6-8 S oz. glasses of water a day (if you already drink that— increase by 2 glasses)
*Cool compresses may be applied following treatment for comfort. If neck or decolletage are treated, the redness might last slightly longer.
*Do not exercise for 24 hours after treatment and avoid strenuous exercise for two to three days after treatment until redness completely subsides.
*Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot baths or showers until redness is gone.
*Continue to avoid sun exposure to the treatment areas and apply a broad spectrum sunblock with SPD minimum of .30. Apply it at least 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and repeat after every two hours of sun exposure.
*After 2-5 days patients can return to regular skin care products or as soon as it is comfortable to do so. Mineral makeup may be applied the following day.
*Avoid waxing, facials, Botox, injectable fillers or any other skin care treatment 10 days after treatment.
*If skin becomes painful, swollen, red or inflamed, please notify your skin care professional, as this may represent an infection or allergic reaction that may require treatment.
Am I a candidate for microneedling?
Patients of any skin type are candidates for treatment as long as you do not have any active infections or lesions. Candidates should be prepared to wait 1 – 2 months after the initial four treatments before seeing results, since it takes time for new collagen and elastin to produce a noticeable difference in your skin. While microneedling treatment is safe and effective, it is not recommended for pregnant women or individuals using certain acne medications.
Microneedling is not suitable in these circumstances:
– Have used Accutane (isotretinoin) within the last year.
– Have open wounds, cuts or abrasions on the skin
– Have had radiation treatment to the skin within the last year
– Have any kind of current skin infection, condition, herpes simplex in the area to be treated
– Are pregnant or breastfeeding
– Have any history of keloid or hypertrophic scars or poor wound healing
What are the possible reactions with Microneedling?
Clients might experience emporary bruising, skin discomfort during injections, redness or swelling, lightening or darkening of the skin, itching and burning after the microneedling treament. Skin infection is a possibility any time an injection or surgical procedure is done. Side effects are most of the time temporary and typically resolve within 3 days. Total healing time depends on the depth of the treatment, skin type, and skin condition, and some patients may heal completely in 24 hours.
What will the skin feel like after Microneedling?
After microneedling, your skin also may feel a little rough to the touch for a few days and you may notice some visible marks on your skin, both caused by the microchannels created during microneedling.
These side effects are all part of the body’s healing process. Microneedling triggers a trauma/healing response in the skin (which is what helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin).
Are there different depths of Microneedling penetration into the skin that achieve different results?
Yes! Microneedling pens have a variable dial to adjust your needle depth. Adjusting the needle depth will allow you specifically target different areas of your face and body, as well as different skin conditions.
When is it most effective to apply skincare products after Microneedling?
External products after microneedling (such as serums) work best when applied within the first 24 to 48 hours. After that, all the microchannels that you made are closed. When choosing skincare products to apply after microneedling, stick to the following guidelines:
- Opt for products with a high purity of ingredients
- Look for low-irritant ingredients and hydrating ingredients (Hyaluronic Acid is amazing)
- Avoid active ingredients (such as AHAs, BHAs, retinols), toners and exfoliants
What result should I expect?
Results will vary depending on the issues and areas that you are targeting with your microneedling treatment, and may include:
- Reduced hyperpigmentation
- Reduced fine lines and diminished wrinkles
- Diminished appearance of enlarged pores
- Improvements to the tone and texture of the skin
- More supple, hydrated skin
